久しぶりに絵を描く仕事だった。
葡萄もワインもみずみずしいので、濡れる画材で描くことにした。筆と墨汁、万年筆とインク、それから紙を用意する。
ワインに共食ときたら、聖書にそんな話があったことを思い出した。書斎にある図録をガザガザと引っ張り出し、古い聖書を見てみると案の定、関連する描写がいくつも見つかった。天に高らかに杯を掲げる天使、馬の上で杯を掲げる人、葡萄の世話をする農夫たちだ。
ある写本では、最後のページに本を描いた面々が登場し、高らかに杯を掲げているものもあった。これはある種の自画像だろうか。
写本は神の声を写し取る仕事ではあるが、そこには人間としての遊び心がある。参考にする本は、スペインやアイルランド、その他の地域でキリスト教と土着の文化が混じり合ったようなものを選んだ。
文化は混じり方が重要な問題であり、昔のものを参考にして作っても結局は現代や私自身にローカライズされることになる。フェスティバルとしては複数のテーマがあるものの、シンボルは一つで強く打ち出したいと考え、このような形となった。
ロゴタイプはこれから描く予定だ。春に開催されるワインのお祭りなので、酔ったような軽い印象のものにしたい。グラスにワインが注がれるように、鉛筆と定規で枠を作り、墨を筆で流して文字を書くことにする。

It had been a long time since I last had a job involving drawing.
Since both grapes and wine are full of freshness, I decided to use wet media. I prepared brushes and India ink, fountain pens and ink, and paper.
Thinking of wine and the idea of shared meals reminded me of related stories in the Bible. I rummaged through the illustrated books in my study and, as expected, found many relevant depictions in old Bibles: angels raising their cups high to the heavens, riders lifting cups while on horseback, and farmers tending to grapevines.
In one manuscript, the final page even depicted the scribes themselves, raising their cups in celebration. Perhaps this was a kind of self-portrait.
Manuscripts were works meant to capture the voice of God, but they also revealed a human playfulness. For references, I chose books from Spain, Ireland, and other regions where Christianity had mingled with local cultures.
The way cultures intermingle is crucial, and even when I draw from old works, they inevitably become localized in the present and in myself. While the festival has multiple themes, I wanted to present one strong symbol, which led to this form.
I still plan to draw the logotype. Since the event is a wine festival held in spring, I want it to carry a light, tipsy impression. Just as wine fills a glass, I will frame the letters with pencil and ruler, and let the ink flow with a brush to write them.
