A HAMLET

A HAMLET was conceived as a “small hamlet” where people live and work. In this project, elements of Kameoka’s culture and Mr. Yamamoto’s tile-making were incorporated, attempting to visualize, as a design symbol, the way buildings (real estate) are transformed by people (residents). Just as tiles change their properties when fired, spaces too are reshaped through human activity. At the heart of this is the idea of “fire management,” and by drawing on the folktale Nezumi Jōdo and its figure of the “fire-borrowing old woman,” the project both symbolizes and proposes the overall concept.
