鳥こけし
工芸の飾り物
「鳥こけし」を制作するにあたり、まず「縁起物」という存在の視覚的特性に注目した。縁起物は多くの場合立体物だが、その「縁起のよさ」は形や装飾といった視覚的要素に込められている。山形の「削り花」のように、フワッとした毛先が縁起の象徴になるように、縁起物に潜むグラフィックデザイン的な要素に注目した。鳥は古来、吉祥や祝福の象徴とされてきた存在であり、そのイメージを縁起物の視点から象徴化することで「鳥こけし」が生まれた。

In creating Tori Kokeshi, I focused first on the visual qualities of engimono (auspicious objects). Engimono are often three-dimensional, yet their auspiciousness is embedded in visual elements such as form and decoration. Just as the soft tips of Yamagata’s “Kezuri-bana” embody good fortune, I paid attention to the graphic design elements hidden within these objects. Birds have long been regarded as symbols of good fortune and blessing, and by symbolizing this image from the perspective of engimono, Tori Kokeshi came into being.
