氷川神社ゆうすいてらす

休憩所のためのサインデザイン

埼玉県さいたま市、武蔵一宮氷川神社の氷川参道近くに、地域の祈りと日常を受け入れるための小さな集会・滞在施設を建築するプロジェクトである。プロジェクトの中でたびたび、水に象徴される流れの存在、聖と俗のあわい、人以外の他者との距離といった内容が話題に上がった。
サインのグラフィックデザインについては、湧水が通過する「穴」をモチーフとし、厚紙に穴を切りあけることで造形を探っていった。
サインの実装については、まず参道や境内で使われている既存のサインを調べた。参道に生えている樹を伐採し、社内で材として保管していることが分かり、それらを使用してサインを制作することにした。また、境内には黒漆で謂れを手書きした木製の立札があり、それを模して神社材に拭き漆を施し、その上から筆でピクトグラムを描いた。この手法を展開し、施設内の壁や扉にも手描きでサインを施した。

This project involved the construction of a small gathering and lodging facility near Hikawa Sando in Omiya, Saitama, intended to welcome both local prayer and everyday life. Throughout the project, conversations often returned to themes such as the flow symbolized by water, the threshold between the sacred and the ordinary, and the distance between humans and other beings.
For the graphic design of the signage, I used the motif of a “hole” through which spring water passes, exploring its form by cutting openings into thick paper.
For the implementation of the signs, I first researched the existing signage used along the approach to the shrine and within the precincts. I learned that some of the trees growing along the approach had been felled and preserved by the shrine as timber, and decided to use this material for the signs. There were also wooden signboards within the precincts with their histories handwritten in black lacquer. Referencing these, I applied wipe-on lacquer to the shrine timber and painted pictograms over it by hand with a brush. This method was then extended to the walls and doors inside the facility, where the signage was also rendered by hand.
